Nine dogs, and one puppy dominated the atrium for two hours.
Because it was cheap and one of two bikes which fit my minuscule height, it needed a few repairs. I also broke the inner tubing (didn’t know the force of my own strength).

The University of British Columbia (UBC) has this a bike co-op affectionately dubbed ‘the bike kitchen’. Students, professors, and staff can come here and rent, buy and repair bikes. They have all the tools you can borrow and bike doctors to help you out. It’s surprisingly cheap. (CAD$2.25 to use tools)

I haven’t owned a bike since I was 10. And there’s that tragically funny incident where I somersaulted off my cousin’s bike and into a ‘longkan’ in Klang, Malaysia. So my two wheel experience is non-existent.

I thought my small frame and feminine wiles would mean I could get the guys at the bike kitchen to help me repair my bike… But nosiree… It’s all DIY. They show you the tools, they tell you what to do and off you go.

I have to say its extremely satisfying when you have to fix your bike up yourself. Two inner tubes, two tyres, fenders, gear cable and one sawed seat later, you step back with your hands covered in black grease and you smile. Cos you did it yourself. There’s a sense of ownership. This is no longer a cheap Craigslist buy. It’s my bike. We now have a history, a story.

And it rides beautifully.

NB. My buddy Hua Soo was the muscle today. He helped me out a ton in the bike kitchen. Couldn’t have done it without him. My biceps only take me so far :)

archisketchbook:

It was crazy. Full of mad people. It was like the Sevens in HK but on a beach and in really cold conditions. There were plenty of Borat-esque costumes but knowing that they’d soon be clinging on to yellow pink hairy tummies were not a comforting sight.

About 2000+ people screamed, hopped, jumped and swam in the English Bay today and it was awesome. The air was around 5 degrees and the water was warmer by one degree. The only thing that was really freezing were my toes after the swim. I couldn’t feel them for a full 45 minutes (they are still intact!). It was really wonderful to run into wintry waters with friends.

Best New Years Day ever.

I’m definitely doing it again next year.

Today I went grocery shopping in my favourite neighborhood. A lot of Indians and ethnic minorities live around there so the kinds of vegetables, fruits and cuts of meat are wonderful and the prices are kind to our purses.

I’ve been eager to make Masala tea after Ravin’s mum made the smoothest, fragrant batch I’ve ever had in my life. She taught me how to make it but I was missing one ingredient; omum.

What on earth is omum?

I asked one of the guys at the store if they sold omum. He gave me a look. I shrugged… I wasn’t sure if I said it right. (I’m not Indian, I can’t say it with an Indian accent. We don’t offend anyone when living in Canada).

As he walked me over to the spice bins, I told him I wanted it to make Masala tea. Maybe he could figure out what I was really looking for.

He pointed to a bin. Methy Fenugreek was printed on the label. Then he told me all he health benefits of methy fenugreek and approved my excellent choice of putting it into my tea.

Before long we became friends. He gets his fresh curry leaves direct from Hawaii and he’s going to pass me some curry leaf stalks to try and grow my own plant at home. He’s expecting some sambal from me.

He was also amused that the Chinese girl bought Indian bitter gourd and not the Chinese ones. He was happy to hear that I was going to make fried bitter gourd chips. His mum used to make them when he was a child.

I can’t wait to make Indian this weekend.

3

I’m so excited for ironman 3…..
